I recently completed phase 1 for the Reynolds family, their kid's bonus room, Sam's room, and a few other minor sprucing up details. I am thrilled at how these spaces turned out! Sarah had some of her own ideas and concerns in the beginning with 3 active boys, she wanted spaces that would be durable to heavy use but also practical and comfortable for the family. She also likes to have a theme going on.. at first, I wasn't on board for doing a themed room, as many times those can be a bit cheesy. But in the end, these themed spaces can easily be transformed into a different look because the theme is just barely there :)
The Bonus Room - a.k.a 'City Loft' is a mix of industrial accents with comfy accommodations. This space needed to have a few different 'zones' - game playing, TV watching & homework/craft doing and that is just what I gave them.
lets see how the room started off.....
We installed a faux brick wainscot to the lower portion of the wall, this gave the room some dimension and interest. I mixed in metal & concrete accents with the media cabinet and game table stools, a soft shag rug could resemble grass and the desk area boasts a large wall decal of the Charlotte skyline, all going with the 'city loft vibe'.
Sam's room is next!
He is the youngest in the family and prior to the makeover his room was so sad, mattress on the floor, no organization or color, it just really needed help. He loves the teenage mutant ninja turtles right now so that was the obvious way to go in his room.
Since his room is rather small, I decided to keep with the twin size bed, but turn it horizontal and create a custom daybed. This would elongate the room and provide more floor space for playing legos. The nod to TMNT is in simple framed art pieces that can easily be swapped out when he outgrows this phase. I am a sucker for horizontal stripes and by doing this on the outer walls, this also makes the room feel larger.
lets take a peek at the room before I got my hands on it....
So much brighter and happier!! This kid now has a room he can
enjoy and was designed especially for him!
I love, LOVE the way these rooms turned out!! and I will probably never say never to another themed room, as long as its done right! Sarah and her family were super thrilled to come home to the reveal! I love seeing the faces on happy clients faces when their spaces are completed!! Makes my job so much fun & definitely worth it.
Up next is Sarah's master bedroom, which you can read about here....
until next time.... design swell. live well.
